The story takes place in the devastated southern town of the Soviet Union right after the end of WWII. The widow of the hero-pilot shelters two derelicts in her dwelling. She steals food from the police canteen to feed new habitants and her sixteen-year-old daughter. Indignant, the daughter reports her mother to the police, and the Soviet court immediately sends the mother to prison.
