After returning to her hometown from big city life, Rose befriends James who is deaf. It's the 50s, and although everyone has always treated James like an outcast, Rose finds him intriguing. She learns that there are many ways to communicate, and finds that he is intelligent and creative. James is finally 'seen' and Rose discovers herself and learns to appreciate the life she left behind.
