Fresh out of veterinary college, James Herriot struggles to find work. On an interview to be a veterinary assistant in Yorkshire, he’s thrown into the deep end.

As James settles into life in the Dales, Siegfried’s younger brother Tristan returns from veterinary college in Edinburgh, and James feels threatened by the new arrival.

Siegfried is offered a job at Darrowby Racecourse that he’s wanted for a long time, but he’s torn between his ambition and his loyalty to James.

Tristan takes care of a sick dog to convince Siegfried to give him money for school. James gets closer to Helen when he helps treat their prize bull.

At the Darrowby Show, James is pleased as punch that he’s been given the honor of Attending Vet. But Siegfried and Tristan know the job is a poisoned chalice.

With the Rudd family’s finances on the line, James and Tristan ignore Siegfried’s advice and decide to carry out an extremely high-risk procedure on a pedigree cow.

On Christmas Eve, as James tries to bury his pain over Helen’s upcoming wedding, the two respond to an emergency veterinary call that ends up stranding them together.
