Just 10,000 years ago, as the world emerged from the last Ice Age, one species evolved the intelligence to manipulate the natural world as never before: Homo sapiens – the wise man. Each program begins by identifying human problems, explores how nature has solved them, and shows how science has adapted or mirrored these solutions.

    1. Sensing

We, as humans, have fairly advanced senses, but there is a great deal we can learn from nature. This program looks at how evolution enhances our technology. Great ‘sensers’ include the seal, whose whiskers detect water turbulence after 30 seconds; elephants, who ‘hear’ through their feet over 2 km away; and bats, whose ability to echolocate has led to the design of a bike for blind people.

    2. Extremes

We have taken cues from nature’s most extreme examples. Huskies survive in the coldest places and avoid overheating. Based on their cooling methods, scientists developed the ‘Bear glove’. Copying a giraffe’s blood pressure regulation, Swiss scientists made a suit for fighter pilots. Crash helmets are improved by copying brain protection of woodpeckers.

    3. Arms Race

Evolution is a race. A survival of the fittest. Nature has come up with incredible answers to our planet’s difficult questions. Animals’ exoskeletons inspire scientists to aid disabled people to walk. The cuttlefish’s camouflage has led to military tech. Owl wings help design quieter fan blades. We copy nature to advance ourselves.
