Miranda finally resurfaces only to push Calvin away, Claretha starts an online wig business, and Curtis assigns deadlines for all of the houseguests to leave.

Curtis feels betrayed when C.J. confesses that he's the one replacing him as fire chief, while Ella is appalled that a new pastor plans to close down the Help Center.

New couple Floyd and Claretha babysit the twins, as Calvin, Miranda, C.J., Janine, Curtis and Ella attend a marriage retreat with a personality flip-flopping exercise.

On their way to work out the details of their divorce, Calvin and Miranda get stuck in an elevator together, while Curtis has accidentally been taking Ella's estrogen pills.

During a lightning storm, C.J. and Janine argue over expenses in their new house, Calvin and Miranda bet against each other on a football game, and Curtis and Ella reminisce.

Curtis fully embraces the culture of Japan after throwing a dart at a world map, as Janine's ex-drug dealer Blue stumbles into the Help Center succumbing to AIDS.

While Floyd and Curtis partner up in a home brew business, Janine insists on comforting a dying Blue, who offers words on fighting addiction and asks to be forgiven.

The Paynes are surprised when Malik announces his intention to join the ROTC. Curtis is asked to rejoin the fire department, but not in the role he expected.

Despite patching things up with Miranda, Calvin still has a long way to go with her mother Mrs. Lucas, while Curtis is furious with Ella for quitting her job to go to school.

With Curtis feeling unappreciated for his long service to the city, being roasted by family and friends at a surprise retirement party only worsens things.

A homeless man (Ben Vereen) begins to guide Curtis through his depression, as Floyd hosts a 70s-style couples game show pitting C.J. and Janine against Calvin and Miranda.

Ella inadvertently recommends an explicit book to Claretha and Miranda, while Curtis counsels C.J. over the death of a firefighter who was trying to improve his performance.

Miranda's doctor informs her there may be a serious problem with her pregnancy, as Curtis and Claretha hope to make big money liquidating an abandoned storage unit.

While Curtis appears on a children's show and Janine's fastidious mother Liz visits, C.J. can't bring himself to read a letter from the daughter of the firefighter he lost.

Ella goes back to college, and she's quickly overwhelmed. All the students seem younger and more prepared. But her life experience wins out
