When the perfectly preserved body of a two-year-old girl is found at an abandoned mental hospital, Blake and DCI James pursue two former patients. Eric Thornton is a schizophrenic, John Littlewood a violent drug user.

Clare clashes with the drug squad, which is running a parallel investigation into Eric Thornton's employer. The child's death remains a mystery, and Clare is accused of having blood on her hands.

When millionaire Donald Griffith is found dead in his swimming pool, it seems like justice. He was a complete fraud--cheating on his wife with two women, duping his clients out of millions. Assistant Commissioner Branton asks Clare to investigate.
