Of Money and Blood

In 2009, Simon Weynachter sets up a new department to fight white-collar crime. During a routine search, he uncovers what seems to be a VAT scam involving Fitous and Bouli, two cunning crooks from Belleville, and Jérôme Attias, a mysterious trader from the wealthy side of Paris. His growing obsession with the case pushes away his drug-addicted daughter, Emilie.

Fitous, Bouli and Attias' plan is revealed to be a carbon credit scam called "Overgreen". Simon's investigation leads him to a whistleblower who explains how massive fraud on this multi-billion-dollar market is possible. These high-tech fraudsters must be stopped quickly before they make entire fortunes disappear.

Attias' entourage is concerned about his increasing ties with Belleville crooks. His wife Annabelle and her billionaire father fear his taste for risk and excess. Simon tries to stop the "scam of the century", but the criminals escape at the last moment. He has no idea where they are - or where his daughter is either, as she has slipped through his fingers.

Fitous, Bouli and Attias settle in Tel Aviv to launch their carbon market scam. The scheme succeeds and dirty money pours in. Simon has Annabelle Attias taken into custody, hoping she will talk. He traces the crooks to Israel but doesn't know which city they are hiding in. He travels there, seeking a disreputable informant, while Emilie's only contact with him is desperate phone calls he ignores.

Simon's informant is Anton Zagury, a known fraudster who agrees to snitch for a tax deal. Fitous, Bouli and Attias make millions while Annabelle grows frustrated with her husband's lies. Back in France, Simon is ignored by the authorities and must continue alone, trying to reconnect with his daughter as Zagury makes first contact with the crooks in Tel Aviv.

French authorities finally attempt to arrest Fitous, Bouli and Attias, but a clumsy mistake lets them destroy evidence and escape, hiding fortunes in offshore companies. Extradited to France, the case collapses when authorities refuse Zagury's deal. Meanwhile, Simon finds a new lead: Fitous and Bouli have been cheating Attias, which he can use against them.
