Penny-pinching bookie Sorrowful Jones takes in young Martha Jane after her father leaves her as a marker and disappears, pulling Sorrowful into gangster Big Steve Holloway's race-fixing scheme. With help from his ex-girlfriend, nightclub singer Gladys O'Neil, Sorrowful tries to keep Martha safe as the mob closes in.
