After her father dies, Lily, a naïve peasant girl, moves to Berlin to live with her stern aunt, Mrs. Rasmussen. She meets Richard, a sculptor, and finds some independence at his studio when she agrees to model for him. As they fall in love, Richard's fear of commitment and the unwanted attention of a lecherous baron complicate Lily's life in tragic ways.
