Orpheus in the Underworld is the quantum leap in Offenbach's operetta course, although it was strictly limited under a Napoleonic law: more than three actors were not allowed on stage. For the performance at the Hamburg State Opera, Rolf Liebermann chose three actors whose immense, almost theatre- and film-historical popularity stands for itself.
