The attack on Pearl Harbor leads Robert Leckie and John Basilone into combat; Eugene Sledge says goodbye to pal Sid Phillips.

The 1st and 7th Marines endure jungle hardships and a Japanese barrage in an attempt to retake a lost airfield in Guadalcanal.

On leave in Melbourne, Leckie finds romance, while Basilone receives a Medal of Honor...and orders to return home to the U.S.

As Sledge trains for combat in the U.S., Leckie and the 1st Marines combat the enemy and the elements in the jungles of New Britain.

Part Five. While Basilone reluctantly plays the war hero at home, Sledge gets his first taste of combat on the island of Peleliu.

Part Six. Sledge and Leckie battle oppressive heat and lack of water as the 1st Marines continue their assault on the Peleliu airfield.
